A Note From the Softest Team
Aoife applied to 47 roles over four months. She heard back from a handful, interviewed at three companies, and made it to a final-round case study she’d spent a whole weekend preparing. Then, nothing. No feedback, no rejection email, just silence.
Her first instinct was to take it personally. That’s almost everyone’s first instinct. But the honest, more useful read is that she ran into a hiring process that has quietly gotten harder for nearly every candidate out there, not just her.
We see this play out often in conversations with candidates across Ireland, the UK, and Europe; this feeling of applying into a void comes up again and again. So we wanted to write something honest about it, not to sugarcoat the search, but to help you carry it a little better.
The Silence Usually Isn’t About You
Hiring today runs through more automated screening, leaner recruitment teams, and a higher volume of applications per role than it used to. That combination means good candidates get missed, interviews go unacknowledged, and final-round case studies sometimes disappear into an inbox with no closure.
None of that is a verdict on your ability. It’s the shape of a system that’s currently sorting far more applications than it has people to review them properly. Knowing that doesn’t make the silence sting less in the moment, but it does answer the quiet question most job seekers ask themselves after a process like Aoife’s: “Was it me?” Usually, the honest answer is no.
What Actually Helps When You’re in It
Give yourself a close-out window. Send one polite follow-up after applying or interviewing, then give it a little more time. If nothing comes back after that, it’s fair to treat the door as closed and put your energy elsewhere. Checking an inbox for a decision that’s already been made doesn’t change the outcome; it just costs you peace of mind.
Lean into relationships, not just applications. A role that comes through someone who already knows your work, a former colleague, a mentor, or a recruiter who understands your background, moves very differently than a cold application into a portal. When a recruiter puts a candidate forward, it’s usually because they already know the client, the role, and why the fit makes sense, not because a CV matched some keywords.
Be selective about where you spend your effort. Not every live posting reflects an active, funded search. Prioritising roles that are recently posted, and companies where you have some connection or a recruiter already in the room, tends to be a far better use of your time than applying to everything in sight.
Let each interview teach you something, even without formal feedback. Real feedback after a rejection is rare, however much every candidate wishes for it. Rather than waiting on an explanation that may never come, it helps to treat each interview as its own small data point: what came up that you’d want to sharpen next time, what question caught you off guard, what you’d say differently.
Protect your energy on purpose. A search that runs for months takes a real toll, and pretending otherwise doesn’t help anyone. Building in proper breaks and running your search on a steady, repeatable rhythm rather than exhausting bursts tends to hold up far better over time, for your results and for how you feel along the way.
It Does Turn Around
Long stretches of silence don’t have to be the end of the story. Candidates who’ve gone through months of discouraging quiet have gone on to interview within days once the right connection came through. Sometimes a single conversation is what it takes to move from a cold application into an active process, and a well-supported one at that.
The part that matters most isn’t just the placement. It’s a process that feels transparent and human throughout, because a search built around realistic expectations and people who are actually in your corner holds up better than one built on hoping the silence means something it probably doesn’t.
If you’re in the middle of a search right now, it can help just to talk it through with someone, whether that leads to a live role or just a second, honest opinion on where things stand. Our team at Softest is always happy to have that conversation.
